    ...
The ride meanders on. the scenery changes, but seems to repeat itself like an old cartoon, always the same corn fields, always the same cows, but the road markers say they have traveled twenty miles.
"quite a long ride to the city" the man says, more to himself than the bus driver.
    ...
    into unconsciousness.
With a jerk the man awoke. the bus had stopped and the driver was giving him a blank look. The man assumed it was his time to get off so he grabbed his case and with a nod to the large driver, made his way from the bus. The man stared with an empty look at his surroundings. he was supposed to be in the city, but instead found himself faced with seemingly never-ending sand dunes. suddenly the situation dawned on him and he whipped around towards the bus again only to find it gone without a sound. only a bus stop sign remained, engraved with the number 5 for the bus he had taken to get to the place he was. He stood shoulders slumped staring at the empty plot of sand that the bus once rested. how could this have happened? where did the bus go? where am i? questions reeled through his head but none could be rationally answered. with a deep breath he did a full turn and scanned the surrounding environment. Blinding white sand dunes stretched as far as he could see in every direction. He was standing on top of the largest dune in the whole area and below him clouds moved through the dunes. it was then he realized that each dune was actually many miles away from each other, and that the dune he was standing on was of mountainous size and proportion. "Movement" he said to himself, "i have to start moving." he took one last look for any landmarks other than the dunes, and towards the direction of the bus stop he spotted a slight smear of green. there was no way to know what it was but he decided he needed to go there.
He walked for what seemed like days, nonstop down the face of the dune towards the green smudge in the distance. even though he knew that he had been walking for multiple days, the sun had never set, and he never grew tired, and the next dune never seemed to get any closer. He had been trudging along without looking back, afraid that the distance he had traveled was much less than he had imagined. he continued to walk for days. and when he seemed to make no forward progress he looked back up the dune. he had traveled no more than twenty feet. The man fell to his knees and tears streamed down his face in a sudden and jarring realization of the situation he was in. he was never going to make if off this dune, and he was probably going to die there. But the man wasn't one to give up and in a fit of rage he leapt off the steep incline of the dune and found himself flying through the air. he fell for quite some time off the dune and eventually fell through a layer of clouds and landed on an incline, what he could only assume to be the next dune. when he looked back he could see that he had flown a huge distance, and the bus stop was no longer behind him. for whatever reason, jumping worked much better than walking, so he started to leap up the face of the next dune, and reached the summit many miles above in a matter of minutes. soon the man was taking bigger and bigger leaping strides, and before long was practically flying from dune to dune. he found himself laughing uncontrollably the whole time as he flew through the air at breakneck pace.
